Attributes

1) What is the difference between Field, Attribute and Display As?

A Field is the baseline upon which variations of Attribute and Display As originate from. In the database, the Field will remain constant regardless of what you name the Attribute or Display As. The Field cannot be renamed, but if a standard Field does not meet your requirements then a Misc field can be used for the baseline. A Field can only be maintained in Catalogs > Attributes.

An Attribute is what a CSV file is read against during a file Import. When the catalog is first created, the Attribute has the same name as the Field, but this can easily be changed to what your requirements are. An Attribute can only be maintained in Catalogs > Attributes. Use only standard characters for the Attribute, no accented characters.

A Display As is what will be displayed to the user during a punchout. The Display As is based on the Attribute and can be changed to meet your requirements. This feature becomes very useful when a catalog is used to display various languages in the punchout. A common example is the maintenance of the Item Part Number for various languages in the same catalog. A Display As can only be maintained in Views > Attributes.

Example 1: If the administrator maintains the catalog in English.

Field -> Attribute -> Display

ItemPartNumber -> Item Number -> Item #  [The punchout display is in English.]
ItemPartNumber -> Item Number -> Numéro de la pièce  [The punchout display is in French.]
ItemPartNumber -> Item Number -> 零件编号  [The punchout display is in Chinese.]

Example 2: If the administrator maintains the catalog in French.

Field -> Attribute -> Display

ItemPartNumber -> Numero de la piece -> Numéro de la pièce   [The punchout display is in French.]
ItemPartNumber -> Numero de la piece -> Item #  [The punchout display is in English.]
ItemPartNumber -> Numero de la piece -> 零件编号    [The punchout display is in Chinese.]
